Mavka – The Enchantress of the Forest

Illustration by Ula Patoka | Ukrainian Operatic Arias | The Forest Song by Vitaliy Kyreiko

This illustration by Ula Patoka was created for Mavka’s Aria “O ne zhurysya za tilo” (“Oh, Do Not Mourn for the Body”) from The Forest Song (Lisova Pisnya)—a lyrical Ukrainian opera composed by Vitaliy Kyreiko, based on the iconic 1911 poetic drama by Ukrainian writer Lesya Ukrainka. The artwork is part of the Anthology of Ukrainian Operatic Arias by UCVP.

Mavka is one of the most enduring heroines in Ukrainian folklore and literary tradition. As a forest spirit, she symbolizes the soul’s intimate connection with nature, beauty, and loss. In Kyreiko’s operatic adaptation, her story is one of spiritual longing and transformation—culminating in an aria that reflects on the impermanence of the body and the immortality of love.

Patoka’s operatic artwork is grounded in careful research and symbolic storytelling. Each visual element—organic ornamentation based on Ukrainian folk motifs, emotional expression, and composition—echoes the opera’s rich philosophical layers. Most poignantly, the illustration captures Mavka’s metamorphosis into a willow tree, her body delicately entwined with flowing branches and leaves. This powerful visual metaphor draws directly from the opera’s narrative and its literary roots, embodying themes of grief, transcendence, and the cycles of nature.

This piece stands as both a tribute to Ukraine’s operatic heritage and an interpretive tool for audiences, students, and performers. It reminds us that opera is not just music—it is memory, myth, and cultural identity brought to life.
