The Ukrainian Classical Voice Project presented The Ukrainian Journey, a collaborative recital featuring conductor and pianist Noah Palmer, Artistic Director of Trinity Music, and soprano Irina Petrik, founder of the Ukrainian Classical Voice Project.
Through a carefully curated program of art songs, operatic arias, and American song, Palmer and Petrik traced an immigrant’s journey to the New World, exploring themes of homeland, departure, displacement, memory, identity, and belonging. Ukrainian repertoire formed the heart of the program, creating a musical narrative in which personal experience and cultural memory intersected with the universal search for home.
The recital featured works by Mykola Lysenko, Mykola Arkas, Semen Hulak-Artemovsky, Vasyl Barvinsky, Stefania Turkewich, Yuliy Meitus, Kostyantyn Dankevych, Anatoly Kos-Anatolsky, and Myroslav Skoryk, alongside works by American composers Gian Carlo Menotti and Leslie Adams. The program also included Parasya’s Dumka from Modest Mussorgsky’s The Fair at Sorochintsy, drawing upon a Ukrainian folk song and offering a revealing example of how Ukrainian musical material entered the broader imperial Russian repertoire, often without its cultural origins receiving comparable recognition.
Songs by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin created another unexpected connection between Ukrainian and American musical traditions through the Gershwin family’s roots in the region of present-day Ukraine.
By interweaving Ukrainian classical repertoire with music created in America, The Ukrainian Journey reflected on the ways immigrants carry culture across borders, preserving memories of one homeland while creating a life in another. The recital offered a musical exploration of migration and cultural identity while affirming the enduring capacity of song to connect past and present, homeland and diaspora.
